Since it is another control micoprocessor that is essentially a blank slate - Id just create a simple API that a Netlinx master could use to talk to it. It all depends what you need to do. One or two triggers: easy. A whole method for one to control the other: more work. I'd do rs232. Simple and effective 2-wat comm.
