Reports and filtering based on message text

I am using enterprise 4.1.12 (hotfix to solve the bargraph resetting on gateway re-init) for maintenance tracking (and also a form of logging whenever projectors are left on after normal business hours), and would like to use the "Service Request Message" field in the report viewer to filter maintenance requests based on text received in the original message.

Even with using wildcards around a set of words, or even a single word (that exists in each and every projector left on message) in the "Service Request Message" field on the report manager, the report comes up with no records.

Using the same date range and locations selected as the original request without any text in the "Service Request Message" field, the report runs and displays records with no trouble.

Has anyone tried to use filtering such as this, and if so what is the special sauce needed to make it work?
