There are a few threads on this product line. One waring you may have missed: if using RS-232, turn the power savings features off. If power-savings is active, the RS-232 port turns off when the set is on standby, and you will have no way to turn it back on with that port.

    Sharp TV control Sucks

I've had to use both IR and 232 on certain Sharp LCDs. Because the discrete power and input codes dont work on certain models. But when the TV power goes off so does the 232 port. So I have needed to use IR for a toggle power, but 232 power off as an anchor and 232 for my input switching.

The worst thing is, is that it is not model specific. I had 4 Sharps, same model, but different serial and 3 out of the 4 TVs worked with IR discrets.

There is a code you can send that will keep the port from shutting off with the power. It's detailed in this post: http://www.amxforums.com/showthread.php?t=576 .
