Recommendation for an IP-232 box.

I?d like to control 16 plasmas via 232 over an IP box.
I?ve heard there are some out there for $100 or so.

Anyone have good experience with a particular manufacture?

thx.

  • I've used Calypso controllers before, they can be controlled over IP and have a few different port config options, but that might not be exactly what you're looking for. I've heard good things about Global Cache, which does sound like what you're looking for, but never used them before.
  • I have used Perle boxes before with excellent results. I used them with Lutron Homeworks processors that were located in different areas of a house.

What is the difficulty with the Extron boxes? They seem to me to be a touch "feature rich", but they seem to work fine in the simple pass-through mode. We don't run into a need for IP to RS232 interface often so if there's a problem with the Extron boxes I don't know about, I'd like to so we can avoid either the problem or the boxes.

I bought one of these (SitePlayerTelnet] a couple years ago and it seems to work just fine. it has good documentation and a built in web server for setup. Set it up as a server, open an IP session on port 23 and it passes traffic back and forth just like it should. They are pretty cheap at $80 for a one port box. POE version is about $100.

well, you can use them in two ways. You can use passthrough, this way you don't get feedback.
You can also telnet on the RS232 port (port 2001 standard) and you get "full" control over the RS232 port, which means your commands are sent and received transparant (feedback)

The only this is, i've had some problems with keeping the Extron boxes connected. Not sure if it's AMX or Extron related, but checking in a timeline every 10 seconds if an Extron box is connected doesn't cut it for me...

I've been using Digi and ATOP but Lantronics is good as are many others. The Digi is a little pricey and has so many features it gets confusing. The ATOP is very simple and comes in many flavors. The one I've been using is an 8 port and cost it around $700.00. Does RS-232 and 485 configurable for each port. Once set up it is very transparent as the only thing that changes is the port assignment in the master and then opening the port. I've even used it with the AMX module for the Denon 2900 w/ the RS-232 comm module and just changed the DPS from 5001:1:0 to 0:1:0. Th module doesn't even know it isn't connected to the NI and why should it care. The only down side is that it initially sends serial port config commands out the IP port which just get ignored by the device.

Sounds cheaper than the Digi One SP that I've used in the past. I'll give the SitePlayerTelnet a try next time I'm in the market for one. Thanks for the link.
