MVP5200i Connection/Setup

When setting up the MVP5200i and on the System Settings page do not change the settings under the USB/IP Settings header, or possibly if you do don't make them the IP address of the Master.

I just recieved mine today and in the exitement to get up and running I at some point changed these settings to the Master's IP and it's subnet 255.255.255.224 and I couldn't connect. I had the settings correct under Master connection but re-tried them as well, re-entered the encrytion key several times, etc, etc. No joy. In frustration I grab another one out of the box and commenced to set it up but this time I didn't change the USB/IP Settings and I connected w/o a hitch. Went back to the first 5200i changed the USB/IP Settings back to the original values, rebooted and connected no problem.

Now I'm probably the only idiot that will make this mistake since I'm always in a rush and rarely read before doing but just in case some one does this, don't.

  • With this subnet mask, are panel and master in the range i.e. 192.168.1.1 .. 31?

The in a c-class subnet (255.255.255.xxx), value 224 only allows IP addresses 1..31

Actually I'm using subsets 2 & 3 and using the .32 LAN IP, .33 for router_1, hosts are .34 - .63 and the 2nd subset uses the LAN IP .64, .65 for router_2 and then hosts start at .66 - .98 or something.

In hind sight I shouldn't have broken it to 8 subsets using the .224 netmask and should have used the .192 netmask instead so I could have 64 hosts per group. The 32 per group is just barely enough (for now) and I think in the future VLANs would be a better way to go.
