Help with parsing and levels

I have an autopatch precis ht and lutron H48 that's hooked up to a NI 4100. The precis is being controlled via rs232 (not using a module) and lutron via ip using the duet module. I was hoping i could get some help by learning how to parse info from the precis and get true feedback. for example if i push the a/v, source, or destination buttons on the tp, i would like those buttons to reflect the actual status based on the parsed info.
As far as the h48, using the duet module how can i use a active bargraph to change the light level of a selected dimmer. I've never worked with level's before (i just didn't grasp it that well in class) so i was hoping to get some info on that as well.
Just so you know precis ht and lutron are both operational through the use of send string (precis ht) and the duetmodule(lutron). I just want to learn how to parse info and work with levels better. I know this is a huge question but any info would be highly appreciated.
