Keyboard Layout

I have an application that requires a first digit alphanumeric search to generate a short-list, but I don't have a great deal of real estate in the gui - (the front end is not AMX).

Which option do you think offers the best usability?

Compressed QWERTY layout
Alphabetical list
9 button keypad (telephone) i.e. Digit 2 = ABC etc - there must be a proper name for this, but you know what I mean!
Something else??

Cheers

Jim

If you're really pressed on space, I'd think the phone-alpha-keypad deal would be familiar to almost everyone these days. (Stress on "almost") You'd just have to do some extra work program-wise to make the logic happen.

Otherwise, if this isn't for typing words but simply selecting a single letter, an arrangement of 26 buttons from A-Z in alphabetic order works, whether it's a single column/row list, or any form of grid.

Heck, my Xbox 360 "keyboard" is laid out in a 4-row, however many column arrangement like that - no Qwerty...
