Precision Distance Sensors

I have a project that requires 10 or so measurements to ensure a part is seated properly, before subsequent action happens.
The sensors will be mounted fairly close (~ 10 centimeters) to the incoming object.

My question is, has anyone ever had the need to use some fairly precise (millimeter) distance measuring equipment.
If so, what brand/model of sensors have you used.
I would like to find some that offer some data output instead of variable voltage.

Wow... And you plan on hooking these up to an AMX controller? Just surprised - sounds more like an industrial controller type of application.

Sorry I don't have sensor info for you - wish I did. Sounds like a fun project.
