I have a job where we're supposed to integrate into the HVAC system and the HVAC contractor was wondering if we can interface to this piece.

I was wondering if anyone had worked with this piece before and it's just as simple as opening a port to the server and sending the messages in the reference out the socket and parsing the responses?

The device in the link looks like a web server for storing user control pages to be accessed from a PC via explorer etc. Many of these devices are not easy to control externaly. You may be better off adding you own gateway to either IP or RS485. You will then need a list of node adresses and variables from the designer of the HVAC system. That way you can get and send any level you want.
