Useful panel apps

jjamesjjames Posts: 2,908
Ok - I'm sitting here, bored out of my freakin' mind because I've got NOTHING to do. For the past few days I've been working on our own dynamic channel lineup module, one that'll parse converted listing from Microsoft to XMLTV. So - I'm pretty much close to done on that - but I need some other ideas.

What cool "useful" apps could one put on their panel? I thought a movie theater guide but most of our clients do not go to the movies. Then I thought a traffic map thing . . . but again - I'm trying to think of "USEFUL."

Anyway - someone got some ideas?

Yeah, you got to do sides with two seperate TP. I once did it with two old VP and an axcess EM232 master. If only I could find that...

The one I was working against you'd play against the panel.

Well, if you are going to expand from "useful" to just fun, you could try solitaire games or soduko or crosswords ... though I imagine you are going to need an active source to get puzzles from to keep it from getting repetitive. You would probably want to do games in Duet though, for the stronger Math libraries.

I think this has potential because of my wife ... she often plays solitaire with a webcast or the CD player running in the background. SHe would be fine plunking it out on a panel while listening.

    Hmmm . . . that'd be fun on a 5200 - probably not so much on an 8400 though. :D

One of the main problems with more complex apps on a touch panel - well at least any vertically mounted one not on the tech side, but the human side. Humans don't like holding their arms out in front of them without some sort of support for extended periods of time, especially when it involves making any sort of precise movement, such as operating a touch screen.

With that said you could do some funky games if you had a house that was fitted with PIR's. The goal could be for the kids to sneak around, whilst one person had a touch panel upon which they could only activate 2 sense zones, if they manage to trap someone and the PIR picks it up you could play a sound in that room and their out of the game. Or if you were in a facility that utilized RFID tags and had a few readers about you could set up a multi-organism game of life where acquired RFIDs could spawn new cells at arbitary locations on the grid.

Games sounds fun to do . . . but not completely useful in my opinion.

I was thinking more along the lines of different types of modules, such as an extended weather module, or a TV Guide module (pulling 7 days worth of TV listings), traffic reports, etc. Things like that . . .

    Whatch'all think?

Yup . . . not the only one

GSLogic has a Texas Hold'em module . . . I've never used it, but it looks pretty slick. And knowing Gary - he doesn't do things half-way, so I'm sure it's pretty good. I couldn't compete with him on that! :D

Ha ha, rs-232 controlled adult toys. Could be interesting.

In terms of useful apps I'm working on one paritally as a tech demo for my device sensing module I'm writing but also as a useful app. Its intended for a specific application where a contractor installs a standardised system that will be programmed after their work has been signed off. It can be dumped on the master allong with the device sensing module and allows them to step through a wizard style interface on the TP for checking signal paths and control. Once it has been successfully completed it will set a 'installation sucessfully tested' tag in RMS is the room is to be RMSed, otherwise it will shoot of an email confirming that it is all up an going. Once the system is up and going this code will still be there to allow for remote diagnostics. Basically to allow us to call up the wizard remotely and allow anyone you can see and press a yes or no button on a touch screen to be able to step through it and shoot us back a report for troubleshooting.
