Liquid Tank Levels

We have been asked to measure the levels of water and oil in two tanks in this home. Any experience on the best way to do this and the kind of sensors we will need?

Is there also a simple way that we can calculate consumption levels?

I've never had to measure graduated levels in a tank, but we have used float switches to monitor things like sump pumps for failure. Here's what they look like if it helps: Float Switch Example

EDIT: A google search using the phrase liquid level gage or liquid level gauge turns up some stuff too in case no one else chimes in.

I would look at possible flow meters. I'm still looking for one that you can tie to

We used a sensor that output variable voltage and put it into a VAI4 to get the data into AMX.

Unfortunately I'm not sure which sensor the water company used.
