I found a pdf online that described modifying one for a LINUX system, which involved removing pins 4 and 6 (DTR/DSR) which would leave just TX(3), RX(2), RTS(7), CTS(8), and Ground(5) , and possibly DCD (1). SO I would hazard a guess at it being a fully wired null modem cable.
I've made up a cable with all pins connected at one D9F end going colour-to-colour to another female D9, but breaking it into a chok-blok just before. this way I can easily remove and cross pins as needed to test a devices comms pin-outs, as they are almost never as they are laid out in documentation (Infocus projectors for one, AMX's own CBUS module docs for another... :-) ) before making a final lead.
