Weird Find/Replace behavior

I typically do my searches (Finds) in the top down direction. But, occasionally I'll be clicking so fast I blow by what I was looking for. So, today I did it and switched the direction of the search to get back quickly to where I'd blown by.
Since doing that the Find/Replace does not work. If I do replace, it skips down to the next instance. However, If I hit 'find next' to skip the one it found next, it begins to scan upwards and doesn't quit until I hit 'replace' again. From there it keeps repeating this behavior.
