iPort FS-4 module/communication problems??

I downloaded and loaded the iPort amx driver from sonance's website, but I seem to be having a problem with the communication portion. I checked that I am indeed using the correct serial port on my controller, but I get no response when trying to control either my 3g ipod nano or my iphone. I opened the debug window and started watching the string buffer each time I pressed a button, and here's what populated in the watch bar:

ERROR=UNKNOWN FEEDBACK MESSAGE

Could this be a port configuration issue, or perhaps a wiring problem? I wired the iport a little differently than usual: I plugged the 232 cord directly into the advanced connection unit and that into my NI, instead of running thru the wallplates. I don't have a 4 cond. wire currently, which is why I did it that way. If I did need to wire it that way, is the pinout just a straight thru?

To my knowledge the FS4 doesn't work with the iPhone or iPod iTouch. You need the FS-22 or IW-22 series for that.

I have gotten my iPhone to work but I had to put it in 'Airplane' Mode. (turns off the phone portion. Also, the base station will not charge the phone.

We've had a bad run of Sonnance iPorts in the last year. Not so much the in-walls but the base stations. Several have been dead out of the box.

Airplane mode? Interesting, I might have to play with the customers iPhone now. I've never actually touched an iPhone but I've tried my iPod iTouch and it didn't seem to work. I now must try again and this time do a little more than just stick it in and then pull it out. Hey that sounds like what my wife keeps saying.
  • Ok, but what about the nano that doesn't work? isn't there something I can check? Another buffer, or data event, perhaps?
  • I saw this post in a different thread:

A quick note, I was unable to get two way communication with a Sonance FS-5 dock. Communication each way worked, but the dock would not respond to button presses on the touch panel.

I checked all the normal stuff like firmware and downloaded all the modules from Sonance and from AMX.

I hooked up the dock to C***tron processor, and that worked OK.

I tried different ports on the AMX NI-3100, even hooked the NI-3100 to my PC to watch what was coming out.

All this looked OK, so I called tech support.

I was told that sometimes the RS-232 port on the Advanced Connection Box doesn't work. The solution is to hook it up through the wall plates(the serial passes through the Audio connections).

    This worked!!!

Any guesses why the C***tron processor can talk directly to the Advanced Connection Box and the AMX can't? I'm curious if anybody can figure it out.

I tried it, but my "unknown feedback message" turned into absolutely no response, as if the 232 port wasn't connected.

When we use an iPort, we always connect it to an ethernet to serial server; using the netlinx controller the module doesn't work correctly
  • Spire_JeffSpire_Jeff Posts: 1,917
I am not sure if it is the same, but I highly recommend downloading the NetLinx version from AMX's website. I have used this module (with slight modification to the UI module to fit my systems) numerous times and it works well. I will admit that the iphone/ipod touch can be a little finicky on the older iPort docks, but I would say that 90% of the time they dock and work properly.

    Jeff

    P.S.
I have always connected the iPort directly to an AMX processor without problems.
  • I'll download that module from AMX's website asap. In the meantime, I enabled the netlinx device notifications, and found this when I docked my 3rd gen nano:

  • I downloaded the module from amx's website, and it's identical. I loaded it regardless, and ended up with the same issues. Also, the firmware on the fs-4 is the current version according to sonance's website. Any other ideas?

Does the iPod device display that its connected to the iPort when you plug it in?

If so, then make sure you put in the RS232 chip. It's easy to miss.

Isn't that just on the in wall version, a very sloppy fit too as it doesn't seat in the slot with any confidence of a quality connection. As I recall I've never had to insert a chip in the free standing units.

I played with my home unit IW-4 with the iPod iTouch and it finally did work but very iffy. I also have a Nano that I tried which is a pain to just dock and that was iffy too.

What's everybody's overall take on these units reliability? I seem to have issue with 1 out 4, which I ultimately have to replace. The newer FS-22's seem better but no physical support for the iPod/iPhone while docked. It just sits on the connector at a slight angle just begging for a kid to come by and snap it off by pushing on it. Are we done with intelligent design and just have to wait until these things evolve out their poorly conceived attributes?

You're probably right about the chip.

We've installed bunches of them and they always kinda scare me. 1 in 4 bad ones seems about right for us too.

We have been with Sonance since well before they introduced the iPorts. I remember we were showing one at a Home Show. They shipped it to us the day before the show with thier version on an AMX module. It didn't work at all out of the box. After speaking with the rep and their tech support, they had to overnight us a 'frimware' upgrade. When it arrived, I was amazed to find that it was the 'firmest' firmware upgrade I'd ever seen. It was a whole new front bezel and plate with a new chip hot-glued in place. It also came with a new 'loose tooth' RS-232 chip.

As we were working with thier engineers on the phone I kinda kidded him about how 'firm' the firmware was. I told him most folks did it with software nowadays.

In general, this seems to be the operation of the manufacture of this product. It's not very future-proof. Early on, howver, they were pretty reliable. The flakyness seems to be a more recent deveolopment. Whether this is the result of working with another manufacturer who does what they darn well please (Apple) or not is still up in the air.
  • Which is the best comm module to use? the Version 3.21 Comm module or the older duet module? I have a client that has the Duet IW5 module installed and we are having no success. How would I know if the Iport's firmware is out of date?
  • ericmedleyericmedley Posts: 4,177
Sorry that I don't have the version number handy. this is the one I'm using right now and it works fine for me. It's the non-Duet version. I could never get the Duet version to work for me.

I do actually use the UI module for this too but have completely redesigned the TP interface and modified it beyond all recognition. So, there's no point in posting that for you. It'd only make more work for you.
  • Thanks! If this module does not work should I assume the Iport needs a firmware upgrade for maybe it's defective?

Assuming the cable between the two is good and whatnot, yes.
  • Update from Sonance...:(

Ok, I spoke with AMX tech, and they suggested that I contact Sonance, as they suspected a bad dock or connection box. I called Sonance, and we were able to use their terminal emulator software to test the rs232 port from the wallplate: All good. I can query the firmware version on the mainboard, wallplate, and adv. connx box, as well as query the name of my ipod. I took that exact cable (the rj11 to db9 sonance factory cable), unplugged it from my PC's serial port, and plugged it into my NI700's serial port 1. This is what I get:

The virtual device is echoing back the commands sent to it, and I never see a string from the physical serial port. Huh? Also, when connected like this, I do not see the firmware version ever populate. As soon as I rewire the 232 cable so that it plugs directly into the adv. connx box, I start to see "string from 5001:1:1", but it looks like this: *I$00$03<<?$FD, which is again, an echo back from what the outgoing 5001 string was. At that point I see a fimware version along with the unicode commands going to the touchpanel. What gives? Does anyone have another version of the netlinx iport module they would like to share?
  • Problem Fixed!

Ultimately the issue was with rs232 port 1 on my NI700. As soon as I moved the iPort to port 2, it started working. As I'm sure everyone knows, the default port in the iPort workspace is port 1. BTW, I tried using the rs232 plug on the advanced connection box as well as the port on the wallplate - both work. Here's the wierd thing - the port works. I can plug in another 2 way rs232 device (a relay box in this case), and it works fine. Go figure.
