VPN-CP firmware & setup

Would someone please explain what does label "Wave-Pak (Not) Locked" mean in protected setup? I have a VPN-CP 2-way panel that cannot connect to Netwave server and the only(? - at least now) difference I see is the button with label "Wave-Pak Not Locked"...

Another question if anyone like to clarify: which firmware is newer:

5.03c, 5.03e or 5.03p?

I am a bit confused with numbering there...

And finally - is that correct I need to use SOFTROM program to update firmware on Viewpoint or there is another way?

Thank you in advance,
Maxim

The "Not Locked" message is just confirming what you already know - the panel is not communicating with the gateway. Check your Group IDs - usually that message shows up when the panel is on a different ID than the gateway.

And while I'm not sure how it isn't obvious, yes - 5.03p is the latest. :)

And yes, you need to use SoftRom. Even if this is one of the options in Studio, I've been told to stay away from doing Studio firmware updates on Axlink devices...

I've had several cases of the Wave server not being able to lock on the panel because of interference due to a local 802.11 WAP. Often you can get it to work by temporarily shutting down the WAP, cycling the power on the panel (remove battery), establishing the lock, then turning the WAP back on. Once locked, they are pretty solid, but if it loses the lock again, you need to shut down the WAP to get it back.

This only seems to be an issue when the WAP is real close to the Wave server, but these days Wi-Fi is so prevalent, I can't imagine it isn't going to become an increasingly bigger problem. On a recent project, I was able to pick up no less than 11 nearby access points from a customer's living room, and these were single-family houses. The customer had complained to me he was no longer able to connect to his "upstairs" access point (there was only one in the house, and the location I settled on was an upstairs closet that was central to the house). After trying to talk him through it a bit, I realized he wasn't refering to the location of the WAP, but an SSID of "upstairs." The problem was, that wan't his SSID, it was a neighbor's :). He had been using it for days without realizing it; that was when I fired up Netstumbler and found all the others active in the area too. It was impossible to get a clean signal on an unused channel, and since he was extremely concerned about security, I had his WAP encrypted and the SSID broadcast off, which made it a pain to set up new computers, since they wanted to lock on to anything but his WAP, there were so many choices. Funny how installing a WAP for a touch panel turns you into the customer's network manager...

For some reason (must have done something really nasty for this punishment), I have found myself working on a large number of old AXCess systems (Axcent2's & Axcent3's wth various panel types including Viewpoints), and have had no issues updating firmware through Studio - and there was a lot of updating.

Viewpoint firmware update through Studio wirelessly..? It is easier than connecting wires and run softrom but I heard it could be dangerous (flash corrupting)... BTW, any clarifications from AMX?

    Flash file corruption

I just downloaded the most current firmware to a VPN-CP panel via NetLinx and my panel has crashed. It now has a continual beep and is not recognized by NetLinx or the SoftROM program. What do I do now? Thanks.

If you are unable to get SoftROM to recognise it, it means firmware flash is corrupted and panel is not able to boot at all, so only way is to get it back to AMX for repair out of warranty !!
