Processor Battery and timekeeper unit

Hello guys
I'm wondering what is the real job for AMX processors integrated battery, and is it critical to change every 3 years and does the battery affect the software and the behavior of the controller ?
And what is the function of the timekeeper?
Thank You

They can go far longer than 3 years. I don't think I've replaced more than one or two in the entire time I've been doing AMX (upwards of a dozen years). They do the usual stuff ... keep persistent memory and settings alive on a power cycle.

I'm pretty sure on some old versions (Axcent3 or 2), the timekeeper and battery are integrated. I'm not entirely certain all the timekeeper does, beyond the obvious clock function, but the integrated one also keeps the persistent data persistent.
