R2 bad display?

I picked up a used R2 for use at home - it's the first of these I've used. For some reason, I can't get anything to come up on the OLED display. I'm stuck at home thanks to our ice, so I can't get to my 2.5mm serial cable to connect to the remote.
Do I most likely have a faulty R2, or is there some setting to turn the OLED on?
