Cursor Hardbuttons

jjamesjjames Posts: 2,908
I think the only thing the 9000i has going for it is you can't mess up the so-called hard buttons if you take the case off. I just bought an 8400 for the low-low price of $100; I knew it was for parts only, but was hoping it was just a card issue. Turns out it's the overlay . . . oh well.

Anyway, in my hunt to see if I could "fix" the overlay (taking a look around), the spring fell out the hard buttons for the cursor. Anyone have any clue how to get it back in there? Not that it's killing me to not have a pretty little touch panel that I can only VNC into to get it to work, but I would like it to be somewhat working again.

I've had to put those back together a couple of times. Don't remember too much about it except that because of the angle the parts only fit back together exactly one way.

I think I did it by putting it back together face down very slowly and carefully. Persistence was the most important thing.

Ugh! Finally . . . guess it goes on the middle button. Now I just need to figure out why the touch portion doesn't work unless I do something that's probably highly not-recommended . . . and it has to do with one of the JTAGs on the back!

You can safely leave the spring out. I've done it many times rather than fight with the thing. The recoil force (what is the real term for it, I wonder?) of the actual button against the plastic top is sufficient. I've even had times when it worked better without the spring than with.

Good to know! Didn't they do away with the spring and go with a rubber pad in newer models? Both of my 8400s are from 2004.

If you leave the spring out the buttons sort of rattle around a little bit in the panel. In my opinion it's worth it to take the time to get the spring in there.
