IR Receive Ports on Cable and DirecTV Boxes

Greetings,

So the latest DirecTV boxes have a 3.5mm jack labeled "External Remote."

My Pace brand cable boxes have a 3.5mm jack labeled "IR Receive"

Has anyone tried to feed AMX IR directly into these ports?

If the Pace boxes are anything like what Comcast around here has gone to, it won't work. The new boxes only support a proprietary IR receiver. The HD boxes do not come with them, but the small free DTA boxes do. I found a web page where someone has figured them out and lists the parts needed to to build a mono 1/8" to stereo 1/8" converter for control from whatever. We've just been grabbing DTA IR receivers when not needed and using them with an emitter stuck on it.
