inferring 'playbackTimePosition'

Hello,
Sorry if this is a duplicate post-i didn't complete the first one before it was accidentally posted.
How can I infer the 'playbackTimePosition'?
According to the manual, I should be able to query the player (IS-SPX-1000) and get it's current playback position, but the manual is not clear on syntax- I am using the GET method successfully for other commands (e.g http://192.168.1.10:1234/update?playback=PLAY).
There's no control system, so I'm limited to writing an html script, so I want to use the GET method, which doesn't use a persistent connection, so I don't think subscribing can work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gerry
