BlackMagicDesign Hyperdeck Studio

Has anyone controlled one of these? The protocol they publish here isn't as clear as I would like it to be, and I've been utterly unable to get it to even reply to basic commands. I'm assuming there's something basic I'm missing, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you using rs422 and did you press the REM button to enable remote control?

That's the only real obvious thing I saw in the manual. Anything else would required more reading and thinking, niether of which I'm any good at. :)

Even though I've been doing this for a long time, I almost never control 422 devices. Is there anything I need to do more than just hooking up all 5 pins?

Clearly I'm not either. Thanks a ton for the help hopefully it's just the REM button.

    Hi Jeff,

Was this just the REM button on the remote? I`m being asked about this as we have to control one so I`m having a read up about it.

    Thanks

We actually never got the dang thing to work. It wouldn't accept any of our video inputs, even though they were 720p sources and it's supposed to handle those, and I never got it to respond to any RS232 control either. We had 2 units, and after the 2nd one didn't do anything I just went with a different manufacturer.

    Thanks for the update.

Out of interest, what did you get to replace it?

We ended up with a Gefen HD-PVR, which is the only thing even remotely close to the same price range we could come up with. I would 100% not recommend it if you're doing all of your control from a touchpanel, you really need to have a dedicated monitor to use the thing. There's no polling available so you can't find out if it's recording or not, and you can't start a recording if it's in the menus, and there's no way to tell if it's in the menus or not.

Ultimately, I'm totally unimpressed with the options at this price point and I've told our designers that they need to not spec things this cheap for this purpose, but we'll see how that goes.

    Not great then.

Thanks for your help, I will pleasantly inform sales that they need to find something useful!
