Denon DVD 1940CI serial problem

We've recently switched to Denon from Integra and I am having issues with serial control of the 1940CI.
The dvd-2900 module from AMX will turn the player on but I get 'not acknowleged' as a response to all of the other commands. The only exception being that when the unit is powered off a transport=play sent to the virtual device will switch on the unit. However when the unit is on and stopped, sending transport=play returns NACK.
After having no luck with the module I tried sending strings (through code, not from studio) and had the exact same results. It seems as if Denon has modified their RS232 protocol but their is no change in documentation on their website or the CI portal.
ALSO I have disabled the Auto Off/Power Save feature, so that is not the problem.
Does anyone know what I am missing?

I would guess you are missing the checksum.
