linking limiters

I'm in the slightly invidious position of having to link a set of limiters to the output of a meter trigger to appease a noise level complaint. I could do with activating some 12 limiters at the same time when the input source (an analysis mic) reaches a certain level (to be determined by the local environmental health officers)

Any ideas or suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Martin

  • Hi Martin,

Hope all is well with you.

The simplest way is to create a parameter preset group with all the limiters in (probably just the thresholds or bypass )
Have one preset as the un-limited setting and the other as the limited setting (call them whatever you want)

create a logic source and connect it to a preset trigger in the logic section of one of the BLU Dsp's.

create a meter trigger and drag the LED onto the above logic source (so that when the LED is on, the logic source will be on)

in the preset trigger, go to the properties and select a parameter preset in the '1' of the 'limited' preset and in the '0' of the 'un-limited' preset.

To add to the above limiter trigger, you can also have a 'soft limit' as your first trigger (hardening up some compressors before your limiters) which if they continue to turn it up will then trigger the above 'hard limiter'

You can also do the above and create a parameter preset of your master volumes and actually turn the system down if you down want to crunch into the limiters too much.

    Cheers

  • Thanks Rob

Could there be an issue here with logic latency as logic acts in 100ms chunks?

±100ms is a long time in audio terms.

  • Yes,

If you really want to go 'old school', you could use the control ports.

Wire the meter trigger LED to a control port output.
place the two parameter presets onto a control port input.

    Wire between the two.

now the control port output should toggle between the two preset states.

(haven't tested this so let me know if it works)

    Cheers

  • There's an easier way.

    1) Delete all of the limiters.
    2) Replace them with compressors with a ration of inf:1
    3) Turn on the sidechain input for the compressors
    4) Route whatever audio was going to the meter trigger into the sidechains instead

    Boom. Thud. Done.

    5) Send Dan an email complaining that limiters should have sidechain inputs so Dan can forward it to engineering.
