What determines master?

On the old forum, I thought I remember reading that the device with the highest device ID number would make istelf the master. The reason I ask is that I have three units (all 9088 MKI's) on my test bench and depending on how I hook up the CAT 5 cables, the unit that is master will change....which I did not think possible with the device ID scenario.

  • In order to be the Master, a device must also have a spare network socket (port), this excludes a SW9000 device which can never be a Master clock source.

So if you have a simple three unit daisy chain, only the two devices at the end can be involved in the Mastership negotiation.

Of those two devices, the one with the highest INTERNAL CHIP serial number will be the Master.

Thanks Martin, the vacant network hole is an important part of the equation I was not aware of. It is all starting to make sense now.
