Soundweb 3088 - start-up

I attended a training course last spring and as i remember we were told that on power up, the 3088 does not know the state of the logic input control until all of them have been used.

I.e: I have a costumer that want to turn off all equipment after each use. In the system I have 3 control ports in use (volume, input mute and preset) As I understand the costumer has to turn the volume and preset knob and mute/unmute to have the system working correct?

I hope someone can help me on this problem

Thanks in advance

Brian

    Hi,

Any controls attached to the control ports are based around resistance settings.A 9012 uses a 50k pot and measures the resistance. The source selector uses a resistor ladder with a different resistance for each position (more details are in the help file)

When you power off the 3088 it will power up in its last operational state. So if a user has randomly adjusted any analogue remotes with the 3088 off, the system will still be set at its last state before power down, and not necesarrily what the hardware state is. If a user then moves a volume pot or source select, the control will 'jump' to the setting reflected by the analogue controls.

So if the user is needing to turn the system off, the volume controls will go out of sync if you are using a 9012 type control.

So a work around would be to use a up down pair such as on the 9015 for the volume control. This control only operates when pressed, so does not have a 50k pot pulling down the circuit. the only disadvantage is that there is not a simple gain indication for the client to look at (IE when at midday that is foreground music level)

For the mute button, look at wiring a led capable momentary switch, wire the switch to a control port, wire the LED to a logic out. In the processing, link a led and the mute, so when the mute is active, the LED will light up.

For the source selectors, look into doing the same thing, so that the current source will be shown on LEDs.

This would mean the remote would be dark if the system is off, but would show true feedback as to the current system status in a clearer way.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Rob

Thank you for the quick answer, it was very helpfull. As long as the 3088 power up in its last operational state i don't think there will be any problems. I was afraid that it powered up randomly (volume anywhere from no sound at all -> VERY loud! etc.

I tried turning on and off a few times and did not have any problems. - but known from experience, problems only occur when the user needs the system the most and i am on holiday in the other end of the country :)

    Thanks again

Soundwebs only power up randomly if they are broken or they have been told to by the programmer ;-)
  • I don't recall having told it anything else than standard procedure :-D

    Clarity injection:
I attended a training course last spring and as i remember we were told that on power up, the 3088 does not know the state of the logic input control until all of them have been used.

It's each, not all. As soon as somebody adjusts #1, the Soundweb responds to #1. When they adjust #7, the Soundweb responds to #7.
I.e: I have a costumer that want to turn off all equipment after each use. In the system I have 3 control ports in use (volume, input mute and preset) As I understand the costumer has to turn the volume and preset knob and mute/unmute to have the system working correct?

No. The system will work fine. There's no need to do anything on power-up. When somebody gets around to touching/changing a control, the Soundweb will respond to that control.
So if the user is needing to turn the system off, the volume controls will go out of sync if you are using a 9012 type control.

This is only true if somebody plays with the controls while the system is turned off. Using a control similar to the 9012 does not mean it will go out of sync when you power cycle the system. It only goes out of sync if somebody adjusts the physical control while the system is powered off. It also goes out of sync if somebody uses serial commands or Soundweb Designer or parameter presets to adjust the volume. In both cases, the state variable will be out of sync with the physical control until somebody changes the physical control so that Soundweb \"notices\" it.

This is also the default action of Soundweb London control ports. The device properties window in London Architect may be used to change this so that the device polls the control ports regularly. This change is not possible with Soundweb Designer and 90XX series devices.

I realize these are very minor distinctions, but to somebody sitting in a control room at 4am and trying to fix their system based on these posts, a little bit of confusion can be far too much.
