No output - Am I missing something obvious?

Hello,
I'm new to soundweb, I've just bought a used one. (It's history: It was used for a few months then stored for 2 years, then I bought it)
I've wired it up, and uploaded a basic config.
The LED's on the front show signal coming in, but I get nothing coming out.
-this is with a config of simply connecting IN 1,2 to Out 1,2.
Other odd things are I can't upload new firmware, and I can use the backup loader facility. - the firmware loader gets to 1% then gives an error (I can't remember what it was, but can get it if it would help)
If I connect a tone generator object to an output, I get nothing, If I connect a Meter object to the input it doesn't show any signal - even though the LEDs on the front show signal - In the Dynamic Metering mode, I don't see any signal in the metering point - even though the front LED's show signal.
If I edit the device and give the inputs a 12db Gain, then the LED's on the front start clipping - but still the software metering point show zero
If I connect a (real) multimeter to the input I can see about 0.2v, on the output I see zero.
I'm using a USB-serial adapter, connected to the FRONT. (I'v enot tried the rear as need to find a 9 pin dsub cable) but I'm pretty sure the config is being sent, I can rename the unit for example, and see activity LED flickering, and the 12db gain seemed to make a difference, as the front LED's showed it clipping.
I am confused! :?

Be careful to use the correct firmware for your model. I tried using the older 9088 firmware by mistake and obviously the box didn't work at all afterwards. I reapplied the correct version 88IIV126.A21 for the 9088ii and all was well. There is another firmware labelled 88ISV118.A21 for the 9088iis.
Hope this helps!

Take the top cover of the unit off and locate the debug pins, which are somewhere near the center of the main circuit board. With the power to the unit off, jumper the pins together, then apply power. After things settle down in the unit, you should hopefully be seeing the front panel LEDs chasing across the panel again.
At this point, you should be able to run the backup loader and load the appropriate backup firmware for your system, which should be a file named 88isv118.A21. You might want to download a fresh copy of this file in case yours has a problem. Make sure the comm port setting in backup loader matches the comm port on your computer, and use the front Soundweb port. You can ignore the MIDI channel setting in the backup loader program.
MAKE SURE that you load the right firmware file. I can tell you from hard experience that it is really bad to load the wrong firmware !! When you are in a hurry, it is easy to choose the wrong file by mistake.
Once the upload is complete, you can power down the Soundweb, remove the jumper and then repower the Soundweb. With luck, you should then be able to load your application again - it worked for us.
Hope this helps.
