routing cobranet?

i'm a network administrator for an entertainment venue and we're expanding the use of blus on our campus. we have a layer-3 routed network.

our AV team is taking care of the management and installation of these devices.

documentation and configuration examples show layer-2 set ups but nothing about layer-3 for cobranet.

my questions are:
- how do we configure/set addresses for multicast?
- how do we find out what the multicast addresses are? i haven't spent any time in the sw-london app.

thanks.

  • Hi,

CobraNet is a Layer 2 transport system so cannot be routed across Layer 3 networks.

CobraNet routing is handled by the host application (in this case London Architect) and allows for point to point transmissions or broadcasts. Bundles (groups of 8 audio channels) are assigned a number which determines the type (0 - off, 1-254 - multicast, 255 upwards - unicast). You chose an appropriate number for the transmitter and then dial that same number in to the receiver.

I could tell you plenty more but I guess the Layer 2 / 3 issue is probably your biggest problem right now....

  • Just to elaborate on CobraNet:
The protocol consists of broadcast UDP packets and unicast UDP packets at Level 2 of the Ethernet stack (MAC address level). The Cobranet packets will not pass through an IP Router since they do not use IP addresses.

More detailed protocol information can be obtained at www.cobranet.info
  • thanks for the information. looks like a layer-2 tunnel is the solution...
