9088iis new and already hanged

Hello,

I've just bought a 9088iis, and started configuring it.
I've made a null modem cable, and connected my PC with the rear port.
I was able to connect the first time :)
Now Soundweb designer said the device (Version 1.00) needs to be updated with new software existing with this release (Designer version 1.5).
I used the Loader with the version 1.66

After a few second, the progress bar went to 1%, then an error message saying \"Cannot update\" or something like that.

then the device has now the Phantom/DSPClip/Master/Sync/Activity doing like K2000, flashing from left to right :?

Any advice on what i should do to go back to a working state ?

I'm familiar with electronics if some jumpers need to be moved... of flah reseted...
the board has a passed sticker from 18/4/2002, and a sticker on the flash with \"SW9088IIS V1.00\"

thank you for any feedback
Raphaël

  • First, the good news. Your device is flashing because it failed its firmware update and is now in Boot Mode, ready to receive the firmware.
In this state, the firmware is loaded using the BackupLoader.exe application which you will find in the install directory, where you will also find the firmware file 88isv118.a21 for the 9088iis. (NOTE: v166 firmware you tried to install was not the correct, 9088v166 is for the 9088, not the 9088iis)

The bad news is that it will only work if you connect to the front serial port, so you will have to either purchase (from a dealer or distributor) or make the cable. You cannot load firmware with BackupLoader through the rear serial port.

Once you've loaded the firmware it should work fine.

    :D:D that is good news

So i'm going to solder the front panel cable and let you know

cable made, just for info the cable has only 5 pins connected (TX,RX,GND,RTS,CTS) and i crossed them to my UsbSerial cable.

So the BackupLoader can connect to the unit :
    transferstart.JPG
The leds stop running during flash erase, then it goes on

But i get many errors during transfer, sometimes cheksum errors, but it keeps going, sometimes a popup ask me if i want to try sending again.
    transfererrors.JPG

Until it reaches the end, saying loading complete
    transferend.JPG

But the leds are still in the same state, ad the unit is nor rebooting, and still the same if I switch the power suply off and on again.

Am i missing something ? Or maybe my usb/serial converter has so poor quality that the transfer is not handled correctly ? Waiting for your reply, i'm trying with an oooold computer with onboard serial interface.

    Best regards,
    Raphaël

by doing it about 8 times, it finally \"worked\". I mean afer rebooting the unit, it is now in a quiet normal state (only power led is on while the unit is only connected to power).

BUT, now i'm not able to connect to the unit with soundweb designer, either from the front or rear panel, using the same cables as before.

I think i need more hint to go on, maybe try reflashing again ?

    edit :

    more info :
    - all the leds inside the unit (on the pcb) that were flashing when unit was ok, are NOT flashing anymore now....

    - same result with an old pc with onboard rs232, can't connect to the unit, either with designer or backup loader :?

SOLVED by using a desktop computer with onboard rs232.
No error during transfer and ok after reboot.
  • There are many USB-Serial adapters most of which should work fine. However, there are some which are problematic.
The two that work that I am aware of are the ones with the Prolific chipset or the FTDI chipset.

BSS Audio sell a USB-Serial adapter (FTDI chipset) works with Soundweb, Omnidrive, and DBX devices which should be available from a BSS Audio dealer or distributor. It can be found on the Products page of the BSS Audio website here:
    http://www.bssaudio.com/productpg.php?product_id=75

The front panel RS-232 cable for the Soundweb is also available from the same sources.

Apart from using a Serial Port on a desktop PC, the other option would be a Serial-Ethernet adapter. These work pretty well also.

Note: the front panel serial port on a Soundweb communicates with the PC at 38400 Baud Rate. The rear panel serial port communicates with the PC at 115200 Baud Rate, assuming that it has not been enabled for 3rd party control.
The Baud Rate setting is found in Soundweb Designer: VIEW menu> Preferences> Application> Comms. You do not need to change the COM port Baud Rate settings in the Windows Device Manager.

Firmware updates with BackupLoader will only work using the front panel serial port. It is not possible to upgrade firmware with BackupLoader using the rear port.

my cable has a prolific chipset, but i've read that some chinese low quality copies exist... maybe the one i have is one of them.
Also, using a macbook pro, even if the driver for osx is ok, i've not been able to make in work with a windows guest using virtual box.
Maybe the FTDI chipset is better, i'll give it a try.

i've been able to make the prolific cable work on my macbook pro, using a windows xp as guest in virtual box.
The windows xp needs the Service pack 3, and with the correct driver, everything works perfectly.
I'm ready to take the road !
