Third party control surfaces for use with BLU devices?

What kind of flexibility does the BLU product line have regarding the use of third party control surfaces as opposed to the BLU-3/BLU-8/BLU-10 control panels?

I ask because those control panels are lacking some key features needed for a specific application. We're looking to utilize something similar to the Rane SR-series smart remotes:
