Windows 7 64 bit not connecting with ATEN or PROLIFIC adap

I have a new computer on which I put Windows 7 64 bit version, and I'm having trouble connecting to a Soundweb 9088iis using my ATEN or PROLIFIC chipset USB to serial adapters. Of course those adapters work fine with all my other computers, and I can even use them to connect to my Shure DFR22 with this new computer.

I just spoke to John Clark this morning, who told me that I need a USB to Serial adapter that uses the FTDI chipset.

One example is distributed by USB Gear. A quick search at Amazon reveals MANY USB to Serial adapters that use this chipset. I ordered a couple of them today, I should have them tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to connect with my new computer.

I thought I might share this info, so if you have the same issue you know it's not your computer or your Soundweb.

  • Okay, so I received two different FTDI chipset-based USB to serial adaptors today, and I can't get either one of them to work.

Did I mention my copy of Windows 7 is on a MacMini with Parallels 8?

The driver cd that came with the USB Gear adaptor is supposed to self-start into the driver install program, but for some reason it doesn't do so with my setup.

So I'm now installing Windows XP onto a separate virtual machine, since I know I can get XP to work with the Soundweb!

If anyone knows how I can get these FTDI chipset-based USB to serial adaptors working, I sure would love to know!

I'll be calling BSS on Monday but I have a feeling they'll all be out of the office for the Christmas holiday.

    Thanks!!

  • The Moxa series of serial port to ethernet adapters works well in the Parallels environment, and has the added advantage of letting you access the Soundweb over a Wi-Fi link. They cost a good deal more than the typical USB to serial adapter, but the added reliability and versatility are worth it.
  • Thanks for that info, William!

I've got Windows XP installed on another virtual machine in the same Mac Mini so I'm covered.

Of course I'd prefer to use Windows 7 if I can, since support for XP will be ending soon.

Do you happen to know if other brands of serial to ethernet adaptors not work with Soundweb or Parallels or Windows 7?

For example, I see on Amazon there's one by SainSonic that's considerably less expensive. I wonder if that wouldn't work as well as the Moxa adaptor for this simple application with Soundweb?

    Thanks again!
