Does anyone know about network protocol between units?

I have a soundweb 9000ii and I'm interested if I could put that to some kind of use without larger network. Does anyone have any idea about the network protocol that the units use to communicate with each other? I can use a 8ch 8M samples/second to see what really goes on the cable but thought to ask here first if someone has already done anything like. According to documentation the data is quite simple 8ch 48k 24bit stream with some kind of control-data.
A small ARM Cortex-M4 cpu with 4ch analog io would be quite simple to put in between of a network link and then manually inject the data to the stream. That wouldn't result anything that could be used on real venues or shows but it would be a nice dsp to drive home-stereo.
