Playback audio file from PC with AA Scheduler

Having some issues getting AA to play an audio file from the PC. Have done this many times before and don't recall any drama, so very likely something specific to this particular windows pc, more than AA, but the pc will play the audio file, using VLC, without issue. Error log shows

"The specified device is not open or is not recognised by MCI"

and

"A problem occurred in intializing MCI"

Anyone else experience similar- ideas or suggestions on how to overcome? I see similar MCI errors with other programs which command Windows to play audio, and some alteration to the file address is suggested, however AA won't take a manually amended file name, so thats no help here.
