the lcd display sometimes comes on dull and although it still seems to function ok i cant find a brightness control only contrast,

Try tapping on the top of the unit above the display (not in a rack full of gear) and if it comes back its the interface (contact strip) between the display and the control harness...

Otherwise its in the 'utilities' section...
