Many speakers or just louder ones?

I wanted to ask if two 600 watt RMS (8ohm) speakers with a 2400 watt amp would be the same SPL as a single 1200 watt rms (4ohm) speaker with a 2400 watt amp? It's still 2400 watts with a 4 ohm load on both.

What is the advantage to using many speakers?

Note: I just saw a band that had 10 turbosound subs and 10 hipacks. Sheeeeesh! (outdoor show)

  • Multiple cabinets will produce higher levels over a single cabinet for several reasons:

    1. More drivers
    2. Acoustic coupling
    3. More efficiency

True Coop! BUT, if you have 1 speaker and add a second, make sure that speaker 2 does NOT cover the same area. That is to say if the 2 speakers have a coverage angle on the horrizontal plane of 60 degrees, you want the second speaker to make the coverage 120 degrees. If the two speakers overlap coverage, you start getting phasing and cancellations that will make your sound coverage spotty. There will be places you actually will hear next to nothing, and then move a few inches and it will be back...

More speakers more potential problems. Thats why line arrays are so perfec for certain area's, and venues. Each cabinet has a vertical pattern of only a few degree's.
