  • Thanks a bunch man. Yeah, we've been running this stuff and testing it out without even turning the DR on since we originally thought that's what the problem was. We've been going straight to the amps from the mixer.

    Hey DJ,

    What did you find?

    Kevin
  • what's up man. I was right...blown speakers. It was the top woofer in each cabinet. It sucks but we know a guy who can fix 'em cheap.

I think what happened was (just a guess) that we were running the amps bridged and we were going into the speakon jack in the back of the cabs.
We just realized (after they blew) that the speakon jack says \"BI-AMP input only\". We are not bi-amping so, I think, over time we could have possibly been damaging them by going into that jack as oppose to the regular 1/4\" input. We talked to Peavey, they confirmed this. It sucks because the guy who sold the PA to us told us to set it up like that. That bastard.

Oh well. Once we get it up and running, then I can start messing with the DRPA again. Until then...

Hope he doesn't live close by...

I'm glad your getting back on your feet!...

I wonder why Peavey told you that running a 15\" full range would fry it. Does anyone know for sure if frequencies above the output capabilities of the speaker will do damge? Sound bad? Yes.
Did you notice that there was no crispness? You should have. Where the speakers actually dead?

    Dra,

Excellent question!... I can't help but wonder if they weren't already blown?.. The guy did tell him to hook them up that way...soooo how did he have them hooked up?... Also,...this guy could have figured-out that he had them hooked-up wrong and told DJ the same because he knew the damage was already done...

Sorry,...I couldn't help myself...it's the "Col. Flagg" in me...:)

PS. It could be that this guy is entirely innocent and he didn't have a clue...

If I remember correctly the \"upper 15\" is full range up to 1.8K and the \"lower 15\" is full range up to 300 (4 ohm load on the x-over with the \"L-15\" having an add on coil, separate from the x-over, for the hi block. If the \"upper 15\" was \"open coiled dead\", then the x-over would see only 8 ohms and would change that part of the x-over freq. I can't remember off hand, but I think it either doubles or cuts by 1/2 the freq. Then factor in that the lower 15 only produced to 300hz, that becomes a mute point??? Or does it. Regardless, the cab would have only reproduced 45hz-ish to 300hz-ish and 1800hz to out-ish. That is one huge hole. But if the speakon is in fact \"Bi-amp only\" and the upper 15 was blown, then they should have only produced 45hz-ish to 300hz-ish. There is more here than we know.

  • For what it is worth, I had the same problem in my SP118 after I changed the basket from a blown woofer. I put a new basket on and thought I was ready to go. I had the strangest sound coming from my woofer only at certain frequencies. I ended up fixing it by just rotating the magnet to where both little yellow dots were above the inputs. You could see a very faint wear mark wear the coil was hitting the magnet. Speaker has been fine since. Steve.
  • Right. We took it to a guy we know. He adjusted the magnet, and magically, the sound was gone.

Hmmm,...I wonder if Peavey private labels or manufactures their drivers?...

I think they employ the state of MS.

    Here's a magnet story.

Years ago (10 or 12 maybe), my then partner & I have a pair dual 18 sub cabs, loaded with JBL's. We had rented them out and when they came back, one of the magnet was in the bottom on the box. We pulled the frame and dug out the magnet. My bud had the frame laying on the floor, face down. He was discussing the recone with a repair tech. He had the phone lodged between his head and his shoulder as he spoke, while firmly gripping the monser magnet with both hands, like he's blocking in coming gun fire. He is sitting in a rocking chair. Got the picture?

He is describing that the glue had given way and leaned forward and got the magnet about 6-8\" from the frame. The frame flew off the floor and smashed all 8 finger tips. He tried to let go, but he couldn't. He finally had to stand on the frame edge and pry the magnet off. I teared up I laughed so hard. Top that!:lol::lol:
