settting auto EQ so not to disturb patrons

edited September 2007 in PA General Discussion
I find that whenever we need to set the auto EQ, the pink noise is very disturbing to bar and restaurant patrons who happen to be on site when we are setting up. Is there an alternative method to setting the auto EQ that does not drive innocent bystanders insane?

  • i adjust by ear starting with a previously autoeq'd flat(done outdoors in free space) preset. Then setup the afs afterwards.

When I have a club situation where pinking in any form is likely to disturb the patrons, I dial up the outdoor preset and then play a CD of various well known tracks, selected for having a good balance (i.e. nothing with over emphasised bass etc). Ringing out is done very carefully to minimise any feedback. I don't use any autos in these circumstances because it generally goes down like a ton of bricks so the audience has to put up with a compromise which they're invariably happy with.

It just fills me with such pride to have so many of you folks learning and using the information disseminated here...I have found also that a preset that I developed that was based on the Flat preset and sweetened to taste and stored to a different preset location has worked well as a starting point ...then if you get a chance to say \"kick the system a little\" (at least in the case of the 260) you can see where the FBX unit gets excited and use that info to quickly take care of any problem areas... Remember to have the monitor system up and running too to make sure that any interaction with that system is noted as well...

I have also set up presets for the -0-(flat) A, C and D presets (pre-equalization curves) A number of past users found the \"C\" curve useful, although I caution you that that was a typical \"70's sound dipped midrange sound...Not a modern \"digital age\" sound.... the other presets can be useful for certain things like spoken word, classical, and bluegrass music. That way you have an arsenal of presets that you can quickly toggle through in \"less than ideal conditions\".
