DriveRack PA settings help

We have a driverack pa. The guy that used to be in charge of the equipment has gone and now I've pretty much taken the lead on it.

Our guy that runs the sound pointed out something that he says has been going on for a while. One side of the speaker is \"hotter\" than the other. It doesn't appear to be the input signal (swapping doesn't change anything), and the amps don't seem to be the problem either (again, swapping doesn't change anything).

I'm new to the DRPA and have gone through the manual. The setup stuff makes sense, but before I go through that and make changes I was wondering two things.

1. What is the easy/quick way to view the current settings without making changes?
2. Could the output levels be different between the left and right output, but be confined only to the high output and not the low (we're not using the mid output)? It may not be confined to the high, but the big difference is in the high, we can't really tell a big difference in the low.

We are running two EV amps, 1 high, 1 low, with JBL speakers and subs.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a very elementary situation.

  • I would start with going to the FAQ section on the top of the DBX User's Group Forum and read Gadget's post titled a \"A Heartfelt Welcome\". There is a ton of information there, part of that post is setting up your Gain Structure which is the first thing you should do. The next step after the Gain structure is done, will talk about how to balance your system so one set of speakers will not be louder then the other.

I also recommend you look at this interactive DRPA tutorial it will walk you through how to look at what each thing on the DRPA does and is very useful to get started. Below is the link:

    http://www.driverack.com/drug/view_thread.asp?forumid=28&thread_id=41950

Turn on your DRPA by itself and play with all the buttons, you can't hurt anything. If you load a program you can look at anything they is set in that particular program. As long as you don't hit the store button anything you have changed will not be saved. The next time you power up or load another program and then go back to the program you played with, it will be back to what it was before.

    Thanks chris,

If the Driverack has been around for a while and this is something new you may be experiencing a glitch in the software...Only a hard reset can set that strait, and that would wipe out all user programs...So make sure you have written down the last detail of the settings before you do(the user modified ones that is...

In order to accomplish this you need to press the program button and select the user modified program you wish to examine. Grab your manual or download the one here in the Training module section and turn to the \"block diagram\" Page 4. This is the \"flow\" chart for the DR and if you follow through the diagram and hit all the modules in order you will not miss anything... make sense? Next on the front panel press the buttons associated with the different modules and page through and see what adjustments have been made. The first module on the block diagram you can affect is the GEQ/PEQ, page through the different pages and see what adjustments have been made. There are three inserts then the Xover, PEQ's, Limiters, and delays...Do likewise for every page of every module and every preset that has been modified...

If it comes down to the point you will need to do a hard reset anyway, set up a preset for 2X6 and set up the mid outs and the Hi outs exactly the same and see if there is any difference in the sound of the hi, or mid outs. The mid outs only have 2 PEQ's but you should be able to get close.

    Good luck

You didn't mention if you swapped speaker cables. Did you? What are you using? 1/4\"? speakon? I have seen 1/4 connectors \"bleed\" as to cause partial shorts. Also check the outputs of the horns. Sometimes before their diaphrams go out, they get week. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the replies. The only time we use the equipment is on sunday, the rest of the time it is not accessable so I wasn't able to do anything until today.

As for the speaker cables, they are speakons, with no apparant defects.

The other problem is that when we got everything hooked up and powered on today, everything was normal...no real differences from left or right.

Oh well, such is sound, as you all I'm sure know! Puzzling and frustrating much of the time.

If it's an intermittent issue, I'll wait until it starts doing it consistantly enough to figure out the problem.
