How to you all figure out which setting to use for the filter(BW or LR) and which frequencies would sound best for a given speaker. Is this all trial and error?

I would look at the specs for the particular speaker and how it's utiliized to establish a good starting point...but I think for people like Gadget or Dra it boils down to knowledge and lots of experience... Ultimately there will probably be some trial and error, tweaks, an adjustments to get exactly what sounds great to you...:)

Keep vocals out of the subs. The deepest of human voices rarely goes below 125hz, so that typically would be a high limit for a crossover.
Depending on a lot of factors - the # & size of low freq cones in the top cabs, available power, etc - the rangle in most cases would low limit to about 85 - 90hz. So... most subs to tops cross in the 85 - 125hz range.
For you particular question some of the links that Gadget has offered in the \"read be first\" section are helpful (especially the rane link if I remember right).
Don't think of it as trial & error. Think of it as trial and success. Where it sound best, it where it needs to be.
