Getting Started with DRPA - what do I use the PEQ for?

... if anything.

Hi,

Just getting started with the DRPA (arrived this week) though reading this forum over the preceding weeks has given me a good head start.

System setup
Allen&Heath GL2000 32 channel desk
QSC RMX 2450 amplifier.
Pair Turbosound TXD-121 speakers.
Crown Powertech 3 amp.
Pair JBL JRX118 Subs.

Setup in a church with all the resonant frequencies that involves.
So far just using the GEQ, AFS, X-over and Limiter. Followed the instructions for setting Gain Structure and Limiter settings as per the \"Start Here\" thread in this forum, set the limiter threshold to +6dB which seems a bit low to me (any thoughts?).

I've had a play with the Auto EQ, but I don't currently have a proper RTA mic, I used an ATM33a which does not have a flat response so not recommending this to others, and yes I know this is about the worst thing I could ever do with the Auto EQ I just wanted to see how the Auto EQ process worked. What it did do was find the room's resonant frequencies (which I had found earlier using Bink's Audio Test CD and a basic spectrum analyser) and reduced these on the GEQ. I've ignored pretty much everything else it set on the GEQ especially the low and high frequencies and finished the GEQ setup manually by ear.
The end result is nice and a lot tighter than what we had using our antiquated Peavey Q231, so far so good. I'd still like to try an Auto EQ with a proper RTA mic sometime, may try and get one second hand on EBAY.

Anyway the question I have is about the PEQ, I've not used it yet, I know what it does but don't know why it would be used. So I was wondering what other users on this forum have used the PEQ for.

Anything the GEQ can do the PEQ can do better, and with less disruption to the frequency spectrum...Try and hit 440 hz room resonance frequency with a GEQ.. you'll end up cutting from 330 hz to 630 hz...just to get 440...Or a reflection squeal @ 12,300 hz, you be affecting nearly 2000 hz worth of frequencies... With the PEQ you can zero in on the frequency and cut or boost it and leave the rest of the spectrum alone...You can also do a general bell boost of half the spectrum with one band if you wish, set a hi shelf for Constant horn equalization when Bi amping horn + woofer tops... Or a lo shelf for LF tailoring. I use them for tuning the speakers since I don't use the passive crossovers in the cabs...There are so many things they can do, and will do gar better than a GEQ... I have likened a GEQ to carpet bombing where a sniper rifle would suffice!
