Understanding GEQ & PEQ

I understand why we want the GEQ to reflect a flat response (Thanks Gadget for all your help so far) so that most of our frequencies are the same level. Why can't you just take the GEQ and put all of the frequencies to 0?? Why do you have to use the PEQ to set the GEQ??

First off.. you have it BACKWARDS... We use the Auto EQ's GEQ settings ( the product curve.. or what the auto EQ process came up with) to determine what PEQ settings to implement. Say for instance we noted a boost of 5 db at say 1.7 khz (in this case the crossover point of the woofer to the horn) and a 2 db boost on either side of it we could take care of all of it with a PEQ centered on the 1.7khz frequency the auto EQ came up with. (if you install the GUI 'graphical user interface' and work through these using the interface it will make this much easier to understand) So we set a center frequency of 1.7 khz and a Q of about 3 (ish) ,this may require some fine tuning, and a boost of 5 db... this has now taken care of all three of the frequencies with one PEQ and affected much less of the frequency spectrum ( GEQ faders have filters that can cause a bunch of oscillations and other frequency anomalies that can smear your sonic imaging) anyway... use of GEQ for sonic adjustments has undesirable side effects. Thats why we don't like to use GEQ's any more than we have to. So we can do so much more with PEQ's and have much less effect on the sound.

Ok so what your saying is if you just manually set all of the GEQ frequencies to -0- visually showing a flat response, in reality the sound would be false and not really be a flat response, so we use the PEQ to make the adjustments and then use the Auto-EQ[GEQ] to visually see how the PEQ did. Is this correct?

Guess thats kinda confusing, but perhaps put more correctly...
The auto EQ sets the GEQ
if you ZERO the product EQ you have nothing but a flat EQ
if you take the product eq of the auto EQ and use PEQ's to duplicate what the Auto EQ did, and you Re- auto eq and have a flat response you have done good, and will get the best results.
