Audio crossover

Hello. Could you give me some advice on audio crossover filters please, I have several different speaker cabinets of different manufacture that I often put together depending on event system requirements; My HK Audio CT118S bass cabinets that I some times put with my JBJ SRX715 have a LPF shape of But18 whilst the 715's have a HPF LR48 can I mix Linkwitz-Riley with Butterworth filters or would it be better to keep the HPF and LPF of the different speaker cabs the same?

In the HPF for the woofer we often suggest high filter rate BW types for the rapid falloff and better protection against over excrusion...

We also often proscribe LR 24 (48 would also be acceptable) filters for LPF and HPF for transitions in the MF, and HF transition regions, but it's not advisable to mix filters on a given xover point ... It would be fine to have LR 24 on the HPF and LPF transition of the sub to mid...you could then use anther filter type for the mid to HF transition, just don't mix filter types on a given xover point...

Remember that the more complex the filter the more complex anomalies can exist within the xover region...Interesting place to post a filter type question... not that I'm not familiar with them, but a DIY speaker forum would probably be able to give more precise direction...

The beauty of the Driverack is the simplicity of changing filter type and slope, the difficulty as I see it is in hearing the differences with high output speakers that often trade pure sound reproduction (as in a studio monitor... where the ultimately minuscule differences in filter type would be discernible) for SPL capability...Usually you would need a very high end cabinet like Danley sound to be able to really hear the difference...

Oh and BTW putting together different types of speakers in the same coverage area is a really BIG no no...to use one type for primary coverage and another for side fills, or front fills or delay speakers is another matter, but you really don't want to use one pair of SRX 715's and a pair of NAME YOUR BRAND DE-JOUR to cover the FOH position...bad bad juju
