I am very satisfied with the sound of my new dr4800, and I am planning to make the whole system digital, from the CD to the out-DSP's. Is it possible to run a spdif-signal directly into the digital in on the dr4800, or how much conversion is needed?

I can not answer that question, I know it accepts ASE/EBU but SPDIF? I will try and get an answer but it won't be till next week...
I believe the information in SP/DIF is a trimmed down version of the professional ASE/EBU standard... this information is essentially the same as is detailed here:

but with a trimmed down information set. The difference in interface (with the exception of Toslink which is transmitted with fiberoptics), is the termination method, either XLR or BNC in the professional format, and RCA in consumer grade. So, whether you can just make a cable up with the different ends remains to be seen...

I wouldn't recommend doing this with cables alone as the Voltages are different between the two standards. I have been successful (even with the 4800) using the Neutrik converters at this link.

Another cool thing about these converters is that they have BNC connectors, but also come with BNC to RCA adapters.

Would these be useful for video sends down audio snakes? Are both ends required? Are there any other ways (cheaper) to avoid signal / bandwidth loss (loss of color and clarity). My application is simply a DVD player (or computer) down a 100' snake to box then another 25-50' xlr to projector. Then patch audio back up the snake. This is really inconvenient (plus requires an extra body to operate).

I think audio snakes are the wrong impedance for digital signals. A short 6' to 10' jumper is not a problem but things will go south if you try to do 100' or more. In the ad for the AES adapter, they mentioned it would work fine with a 6' cable.
