Yes I agree... but the fact that the woofer has the smaller voice coil affects the damping factor of the woofer.. a larger voice coil allows the woofer to switch direction easier..Yes less volume and lower HPF will work.. I don't usually have to worry about it with the labsubs ...they just SHAKE THE BUILDING... harder... 8)

Where did you get the 3\" VC from. I did a search and could not find a reference anywhere. I just measured the dust cap and it is a solid 5\". The RCF site shows no current or discontinued 18\" (or 15\" for that matter) with smaller than a 4\" VC.
Hey DRA. At the moment we've just got bass and drums and very minimal keys pre recorded onto an MP3 player. These are recorded as WAV files with minimal loss. The MP3 player is plugged into a stereo channel of the desk. During the gig this Saturday I should get a chance to turn things on and off and play with PEQ settings etc. Haven't played any rap as such but have had Nickleback absolutely cranking and it sounded (and felt) so nice. I made the comment to Bernie that it is how things should sound. We'll be having a play with things over Christmas and I'll throw some heavy gangster rap at it and let you know how it sounds. On the sub channel it's HPF is 35Hz and LPF is 90Hz. Mids are 90Hz to 2.1(ish)KHz and highs are 2.1(ish)Khz out (from memory). We're still tweaking and experimenting at the moment so this is likely to change from one minute to the next.
So it's a 4 inch VC.. It is a discontinued model...Also look.. the KIT is $75.. so WHY $200 for a recone? that's crazy! Maybe $150... figuring profit and labor.. but if it's all assembled like that it wouldn't take very long...
I think I'd recone...but maybe find somewhere to do it cheaper...

We've run into a bit of a problem with the subs we built. We've been running our two subs parallel off a PLX 3002 running bridge mono, so 1500w a box. I think we've learn't a lesson on setting up the limiter, as we gave them a jolly old clipping a few weeks back and now one of the boxes has a clunking sound coming from with a bit of volume applied. It kinda sounds like two timber planks being slapped together. We use an MP3 player for our duo and its volume is set to 16. We used the player for our break music with our band and had it cranked to 22 through a different desk, and didn't put it back to its original setting, so fired up and a room full of people watched as we grabbed the volume post haste. About half a dozen cracks from the kick drum was all it copped but seems to of been enough. Any thoughts or remedies (and the limiter has been set now the horse has bolted). The speaker is only about 6 months old and used at maybe 10 gigs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
So you DID or didn't use the limiter before this? I believe 600 watts RMS is the rating.. that means 1200 watts loud average music...if you were keeping near full program and limiting/compressing the music, the average power was likely exceeding the ability of the driver. We could lower the Q and tighten the subs excrusion to protect the driver, but that would limit the speakers 'Fo' and raise the HPF a few hz...

The limiter wasn't set when this happened for whatever reason. I think we were waiting for a gig to come up so we could set it. We don't use compression although I think when Bern records our midi files to disk, he may compress that in the mix stage. Now one of our subs gives out loud cracks at pretty low volume, like two planks smacking together. Basically we want to know what we're likely to of damaged and how to repair it. Thanks.
Gadget, for the blistered coil, would it be possible to gently heat the coil area with the blister to the point of softening and (using a form of some kind) compress and re-form that area?
We got our sub back from the speaker hospital. Apparently when a sine wave was run through the sub it seemed ok at low frequencies, but sounded distorted in the higher frequencies. Turns out there was a crease in the cone which has since been replaced. Maybe that was affecting the way the voice coil and magnet interacted? We'll see how it goes tomorrow night, so remember kids, set your limiters...

If so, you'll need to get a basket...and bolt it up...

I've been able to clean up the areas a little by perhaps scraping/sanding the deformity area. Clean the gap well using some tape and compressed air.
if they are too far gone
well.. you'll need a new basket...
