the buzz is driving me nuts...

Hey all, n00b here...

I searched the forum and did not see anything relating to my question, or the fact that I may be blind. However, I would like to gather some help with a ZoneController 1260 - or what is connected to said component.

For a long time, our club has had a buzz - the infamous ground loop buzz - and we need to rid ourselves of it. I know that there are extenuating factors involved with nearby amps, power, etc. But I have seemed to have isolated it down to a few factors and am curious to know if there is anyone who has had this issue, and what paths they took to relieve it.

I also have DriveRack PA's running sound to the mains and the ZC is running the ceiling JBL Control Series speakers. It appears that no matter what I do, any combination of RCA connections I make from the mixer to the ZC, the buzz is there. Hook the XLRs out of the same mixer to the DR, silence. All I can think of now is that the mixer is giving us this horridly loud buzz. I have connected the CD turntable directly to the ZC and no buzz whatsoever, and music is clear and solid.

Any ideas?

Mike

    Well... just a thought...
America is singular around the world (at least as far as Europe and Japan goes) that we have unbalanced power....we reference our power @ -0- or ground, and as such ... if all devices are not on the same power... ground loops can develop...So, before you drive yourself mad, can you get the mixer, the DRPA and the amps all on the same power source? If that solves the problem great.. if not you'll need to list all EQU so I can go piece by piece and see if we can find the problem...Perhaps it's the mixer.. but try the power issue first...IF we used balanced power (60 volts on one lug, and 60 volts on the other...instead of -0- or common on one and 120volts on the other... but alas...

  • I found it!!! Now after repairing some cables, swapping out cables and configurations, and putting everything on the same source and back again to seperate sources...I discovered the following:

    1. The ZC does NOT appreciate unbalanced/mismatched signal anywhere in its' duty in life.
    2. The monitor out directly to the amp via RCA/XLR combo commits a unbalanced/mismatched signal.
    3. Removing the ground from the XLR in the monitor out feed repairs the problem.

Nothing but glorious soothing pink noise. It came to be that after getting rid of the buzz previously, I still had it in the line. So not \"seeing\" it when I took of the monitor feed (which is out of the ZC loop) kept bugging me. I turned everything on, THEN plugged in the monitor feed - BUZZZZZZZZZZZ. You dirty little...

    Problem solved.
