Monitors??

I am just curious if using all of the same monitors and microphones on stage will make a huge difference in feedback control? I just got two Mackie SRM 450's and two Yorkville NX250p's all self powered of course to use as stage monitors. I like the look and features of the Yorkville NX250p's that I might buy two more. I have a chance to buy another NX250p and one NX25p at the moment, not sure how much they changed between the older model NX250p and the new model NX25p. Features seem to be the same.

So back to my question will 4 of the same monitors make a big difference in feedback control, or not really?

I don't know that the same speaker will be better than dissimilar speakers unless the patterns start to intersect... then dissimilar patterns can cause problems...Dra, I believe has the Yorkie monitors.. I have the Yorkie tops (Elite 2204).... I don't think there was a lot of difference in the speakers... but again I don't have them... maybe Dra will step in... as for the feedback thing, get the speakers flat.. see my FAQ on monitor setup...

If the monitor is pretty flat and as such less feedback prone, then yes... but that isn't the question...I use three separate type speakers for monitors... each has a specific strength and the stage can be HORRIBLY loud... with no feedback.

  • Thanks a lot Gadget. I like the Mackie's, as they can double as fronts for smaller shows where my big rig is not needed. The Yorks are only 200 watts but have bass, mid and treble controls on them, which I think are pretty damned handy. I will search out the link to your fact on monitors. You wouldn't happen to have the link would you?
  • I will have to try running the RTA mic from my Drive rack on each moniter and transfer that to my eq's. See if that solves our feedback issues.

I bought the 250P off Ebay (used) and really liked it. I looked all over for another 250P to pair with it, but had to bite the bullet and bought a new 25P. Both sound good. I later sold the 250P and bought another 25P, simply because the nature of my gigs. Appearance is important to me and there are some moulding differences in the cab, plus the \"Yorkville\" badge on 250P is white on black and the 25P is Blue on black. I used a blue marker to lessen the difference. I stored and transported mine in the original boxes. The 25P has finger grips moulded at the top of the cab, which makes it easier to lift the cab out of the box. The 250P does not have these and is slightly \"fatter\" and \"rounder\".

The advantage the 3-band eq will give you is that it will give you 3 extra \"PEQ's\" for flattening them out. The disadvantage of the 3-band eq is that you have to be concerned with someone turning a know and messing up the hard work you did.

Direct mic input is a plus, if you need it.

They work for my needs.... Trax and vocal monitors, or general stage wash to kill slap back delay.

I agree with Gadget. Mixing cabs could actually be a plus, unless appearence is a factor.

  • Thanks for the assistance guys! It is always nice to get some quick knowledgeable help. Appearance would be a factor to a certain degree. We have never had monitors that match and it would certainly be nice! Although the 25p could be used for the drummer and the 3 250p's up front. Them Mackie SRM450's are one hot speaker as well with more power, so tough choice. Might try and find 2 more of the Mackie's, although I still think they have that heat issue that was not corrected till the v2's

Here are a couple of opinions.

    The Mackies... butt ugly.
    The Yorkies... pro look.

    Horns on side 45 x 90 vs 50 x 80... for a monitor I'd prefer 50 x 80 (more near field friendly).

Power. Mackie wins 300/100 to 180/20
Max SPL. Mackie wins 127 to 120
    $$$$. Yorkie wins.
    Appearence. Yorkie wins.
Weight. Yorkie wins 46 to 51
    Tweekability. Yorkie wins.

For a drum monitor you could consider the NX55P. It uses the same cab as the 25P so it will match the 250P's more closely, but weigh 42 lbs because it uses the new lighter magnet.
    125 max db
    450/100 watts
Costs more than the Mackie, but I have heard good things about it on PSW.

  • I agree with you on the looks for sure. I got a good deal on the Mackie's at $800 for pair barely used, as well as on my set of Yorkville NX250p's at $575 for the pair with the hangtags still on them. The other yorkie's I've found, the 250p and 25p the guy wants $700 for the pair. I could aways turn around and sell the mackies.
