Drive Rack Pa and the Peavey Versarray

I need some advice as the guys on the peavey site are really telling me that I should use the VSX 26 over the drive rack PA. I know there are no presets for the versarray but I have set the Drive rack up to the specs I downloaded from their site.

I know it is in Peaveys best interest for me to buy a VSX and DBX to keep me as a user.

I need some comments or thoughts. THanks

What specs did you download from their site? I looked for some tunings there but found only VSX 26 files.

It was on the peavey site under versarray, Safe settings. I will go see if I can find it again,

If I remember right, the VSX 26 has more PEQ's for making necessary tweeks, especially when bi-amping. The DRPA may or may not have enough PEQ's to cover. Use the data from the VSX and input them into the DRPA. If there are not enough, eliminate the most narrow filters and make those adjustments with the GEQ.

Thanks, how do I get the data from the VSX? all I have ever found is the one sheet with safe setting and such, Never go below 1.8 K and safe is 2 K .

Open the cabinet file into the VSX26 \"driveware\", then go to the PEQ and x-over screens. Write down the info.

    I also used this sheet:

    http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature ... 090_15.pdf

It has this data on it

Recommended active crossover frequency region and slope:
    Sub –Low Frequency:
    125 Hz at 24 dB/octave LR
    Low Frequency – High Frequency:
    2000 Hz at 24 dB/octave LR

You will have to locate a link to VSX 26 \"Editor\". I couldn't find one on the website. Go to their forum and locate a thread from about May 19 on the same topic. The person who made the original post was emailed an \"Editor\" link by another forum user. The entire thread should be of interest. I assume this is not a thread that you started because this thread answers all of your questions and you would have no need to ask them twice.

Peavey uses a ribbon tweeter in the Versarray. The behaviour of a ribbon tweeter is perfect for a line array EXCEPT they are totally non-robust and most other manufacturers do not use them for that reason.

I must apoligize. I thought the GUI was still on the site (at least I can't find it). I will try to find the exe file.

I will try the search and thanks DRA

If you'll tell me which set-up you have, I'll punch is in and give you the settings.

    Thanks,

I am a little confused but I currently am useing two DRPA's on either side of the stage to keep the speaker runs short. I manualy set it up to run the system with the specs I have given before.

The only thing I do based on some of the data from peavey is I run the subs at 100 and the mids at 95 to give a little over lap from top to bottom the tops are currently crossed at 2 k with the delay given.

    From the VSX Control Panel:

    GEQ -
    1.6k -2.0db
    2k -2.5db

    X-over - L/M/H
    34hz LR24 125hz LR24 gain +4db
    100hz LR24 2000hz LR24 gain -0-db
    3000hz BS24 out gain +7db

PEQ - L/M/H (filter widths are listed as \"Bandwidth\" and are probably portions of an octive. DR are listed as \"Q\", so you need to convert.
    50hz .7 +4db, 100hz .5 -2.5db
    560hz .5 +4db, 1200hz .5 +2db
    2700hz .7 -3db, 4600hz 1 +3db, 16000hz 1 +3.5db

    Limiter L/M/H
    +9dbu 20:1
    +6dbu 20:1
    -1dbu 20:1

    Delay L/M/H
    0ms
    .23ms
    0ms

    Hope this helps.

Maybe Gadget or Dennis can verify this.

    1 bandwidth = 1.4Q
    .7 bandwidth = 2Q
    .5 bandwidth = 2.9Q

Dra... send me your email address and I will send you a cool calculator that does everything including Bandwidth/Q.

Hey Gadget, You got to love any sound guy that has a car lift in his garage. Do you hang your line array off of it?? 32 foot ceiling? Did I read that right??

    Well...Close...
    1. Set up the speaker in the garage, ceiling height 17'6\" tons of stuff all around

Really? You have an overlap going on?
  • GadgetGadget Posts: 4,915
I see it all in these tunings... It may be a deficiency in the frequency response.. or a possible interaction that causes a split.. geez the Peavey Versaray had a 1000 hz spread from 2000hz to 3000hz between the 12\" woofer, and dual ribbon tweeter...WTF? I just know that the MFG's spend a LOT of money on tuning that we cannot match...They have the tools, and the time to get it right... CAN we do better? depends...not without some tools though... Like SMAART...and some serious learning...

There was also a +7 dB boost on the high out....narrows down that 1000Hz gap a long way. Also puts the acoustic xo point around 2.3 or 2.4.

Hey Gadget, I have installed a vsx 26 and did an A/b with two system right next to each other. There was quite a difference and the stack with the VSX did sound better, I made a few adjustmnts to the DRPA and got it close to the VSX but it still was better with the VSX. I dont know if I spent some time in the P eq section if I could get it closer but maybe??

The operation of it sucks plain and simple. Some engineer that is no longer with them bought a processor they never used before and its bad, really bad at least on the communications side.

I think being able to carry your settings on a USB stick could be handy. Time will tell

Did you get the PEQ info from Dra? He has the VSX preset data...and YES peq's would help immensely...
Remember, unless you have tons of system tuning experience, and the tools to do so, the FACTORY presets are the way to go...

Newer high end processor driven systems are more and going with locked out speaker setups that the USER cannot affect. this is done to take the user error out of the setup (xovers, delays, and PEQ's and sometimes alignment... when it's a \"system\") giving the user a \"tonal\" tweek and little more

    NOTE...
The new DRPA+ is \"supposed\" to be able to (using the 'Wizard') set up a system \"optimally\" they even bought the speakers and amps they preset this time and actually (Jim Ure) DID the tunings...I am assured that the new Auto EQ will \"help eq the system to a room\" within 10-12 seconds...and it WILL sound better no matter where you place the mic...

I dont know if I posted here but I did end up buying two VSX 26 units and my system did sound better with the Peavey presets that where given to me by Marty Mccann.

I was able to do a A/B comparrison with two stacks of the line array and two amp racks. One the DBX and one with the VSX.

The point of all of this, I now have the two DRPA and a 260 in my monitor rack. I love the GUI interface with the 260

The VSX communiction issues are deep and most likely will not be fixed unless the make a change to it and maybe they will.

I was wondering if DBX would consider adding the besel xover and maybe adding the Peavey presets to their rigs,

I would love to be able to cmmunicate with the vsx and make changes real time but I am unable to as they live on stage at this time.

Now if I change to a drive line and install it at the FOH location this issue MAY go away.

I would love to see the guy on the 260 page write a software that would allow me to see/speak to multipul units with out jumpiing through hoops,.
