THOUGHTS ON TURNING OLD SPEAKERS TO SUBS

zonerczonerc Posts: 18
Ok finally got a new set of speakers to replace the 2 Kam IMS PRO15's i have
http://www.prosound-dj.com/pro15-speaker-p-685.html

I got 2 EV SX300's http://www.electrovoice.com/products/202.html

Now the queston is ive no more money to spen and not sure ill get that much for the 2 Kams,if the tweter was disconnected on the kams could they be setup and work as a sub as they are a 15\" speaker? they have 2 speakons on the back as have the EV sx300s.
Also I have a driverack PA and the amp is a Behringer EP2500 so how would i go about connecting and setting up if it was all possible?

Well you could... but my guess is they would require a LOT of processing... they are not designed to do bass and I think in order to get enough out of them processed... you'd hurt them trying to keep up with the EV's...

But... set up a 2x3, send the hi out (left in this case) of the DRPA to the EV's send the left lo out to the Kam's ... you will be in mono...

    Set the lo outs to:
    HPF 45hz BW18
    LPF 90 hz BW24

    Set the hi LPF @ 80hz BW24

you will undoubtedly find a resonant peak or two that will need to be tamed in the 50-100 hz area

The only way I would suggest using them together is.... place the Ev's on one side, and the KX on the other... flip one speaker upside down on each side so the horns are together (remember to strap them together so they don't fall ) this way you won't have such an interaction problem... But I don't know why you don't want to at least try the setup I gave you.. just play ONLY the subs and use the PEQ's to get the sound the way you want it.

Oh I would suggest if you want to try this that you do a dual mono setup and that way you can EQ each side separately...

To do this set up a 'Q' of about 4 and cut say 5db...then move the center frequency back and forth and see what sounds best, it may be that a couple locations will benefit, then do the same with a BOOST of 3 db and a Q of about 7 and again sweep around the sub frequencies (20-100hz) then try more and less gain in those frequencies you have found, and see what sounds best...

sorry didnt mean to say i wasnt going to try what you suggested just ment maybe not something to try straight out on a gig ,give it a go at home first and as for using the 2 sets of speakers together i ment as full range or them with feqences cut back on the amp would handle the 4ohms and was thinking the xtra power would help running the 2 sets ,but hey its all just ideas ill run just with the EVs this friday night and see how are after being on the Kams for 3 years.
And thanks again m8 much appriciated

The Idea of using the 4 speakers together is to get more output... you have more power and more output, the proximity of the horns allows them to work as one horn. The proximity of the woofers gives you 3db of free power (proximity effect) The idea of separating them by brand is dis similar speakers don't usually play well together...

On other possibility, you could set the EV's inside and the KAM's outside and splay them left and right so that the horn patterns just touch... and if you could rotate the horn on the Kams you would have 125 degree of coverage on both sides.. a lot but manageable...and you wouldn't suffer the affects of cancellations and such that double covering the same area...

After taking my sx300s to set up and carring them both in the pub one in each hand no sweat then seeing the differance in size next to the old speakers then carring one of them out with full sweat on lol ,i think ill give it a miss with the kams and get rid and see about getting a couple of EV sb122 subs that are the same size and weight as the sx300
Im not too worried after testing the SX300s out as there is as much bass off them as i ever had with the 15\" kams and at less than half the weight and size.
would recommend to anyone up to now anyways.

I've used those before, and while I thought they were nice the P Audio X12HP:

sound really natural and with smooth natural highs.. I believe it's the Neo drivers... and they are deceptively light...required very little EQ as well...
