using parametric eq

can anyone provide some tips for searching for frequencies using the parametric. For instance, in my my practice room after doing auto eq the driverack cuts 50Hz and the next slider (I believe it's 63Hz) 6dB. when I try to use the parametric ,even using a very wide Q , the auto eq still cuts those bands -6dB. So I guess I'm wondering what is the best way to narrow down the frequencies you are trying to adjust with the parametric? For someone not used to using para eq is the best way trial and error?

In my case I know most of my problem may be the room itself. It is small(9x15),is wood paneled and has no bass traps or other sound treatment installed.

    Thats most likely a room mode...Indoors, the bass builds up and creates regions of coupled bass response...Placing the speakers (subs) strategically can help this problem...Subs in one location, and placed against a boundary can help even bass response in a room. Please see the \"READ ME FIRST BEFORE POSTING\" section for a whole lot of system tuning info.

  • I have read all of the read me first material. And I did assume that I was dealing with a mode.I have tried moving the sub to as many different locations as the room will allow to no avail. I will eventually add some sound treatment to the room allthough reading the specs of some bass traps(can't remember the name, it's not auralux though)it seems they are only effective down to 75Hz.

    Anyway back to my question,if certain bands are cut or boosted, given the large range of frequencies between some bands is just a matter of trial and error searching for the right frequencies with parametric and re-autoeqing until you find something that works or should the parametric basically be used just to tune your system to as flat a response as possible using the indoor or outdoor methods described?

    With only a few bands of PEQ to work with...I have (on the DRPA platform) taken to pretty much letting the Auto EQ with some tailoring, be my baseline and use the PEQ's for room issues... I generally end up with a PEQ @ or around 350hz for the 250, and 500hz \"honk\" factor... especially in monitors... :lol: a high shelf with a 6 or 12 db/octave slope for the hf and one in the 100 hz range... which I'll play with to smooth things out with generally pretty wide filters...

    But yes, generally just familiarizing yourself with the filters, and manipulating them till you get the best results is what I do...
