I'm using the Western Digital "Mybook" 500 gig drive and with being misshandled and road worn and bashed around in the trailer and never had as issue...
I have two external drives, both are an exact copy. That way i have a backup in case of a HD failure. I also backup my VDJ database so all my cue points and BPM's are safe in the event of a failure.
I reccomend from years of having used them; Western Digital Passport drives; they are USB powered, so its all plug and play They will be fast enough for your application also.
I also carry a CD drive as a backup with at least the most popular stuff just in case... in the event of a power failure..those startup moments can seem like an ETERNITY. Gotta love those places with Wi-fi so you can download a song in a pinch...

Agreed; startup can be a bitch.......a small UPS can cure that, in conjunction with your laptop battery (hopefully) i usually have cd decks on the main console; i dont ever play them but there is always someone more than willing.....
wi-fi and a couple of useful links
i sometimes reflect on the days of lugging around crates of vinyl...
I keep my external at home with all music and backups, and a partition on my macbook with the music i use a lot.
If you do need an external drive you should probably get a Firewire drive with 7200 rpm so it won't give you any lag
in case you have other usb equipment in use, for example a mouse or an usb multichannel soundcard
I'm actually down at my sons getting a new hard drive in my dedicated DJ/KJ rig which is in a rack mount server style case that has been in server style case since the dark ages before laptops could get out of their own way. Who would have thought we would have 1.5 TERABYTE drives, much less have them available for under $100! This same unit has done 5 night a week bar duty since the early 90's which is pretty incredible.
I'm also getting a new quad core processor and motherboard for my terminally ill home/office computer. FINALLY
Can I get a typical USB 2 channel cards (lot cheeper) and use it in combo with the headphone out ( for 4 channel operation)? Will the software (Traktor Duo) do that?
Several have told me here that I can split the headphone out (mono master (l) and mono preview (r), but another user says I can't ( though he does want me to buy a 4 channel soundcard for $200 (Sweetwater)). For those that say I can (with Traktor Duo), how?
Had 2 situations that came to light  using the headphone output.
1) At idle (no output) the PC would transfer noise. I guess the hard drive.
2) If I went from the headphone to a mixer and then to amps/speakers... no issues. If I went from headphone direct to powered speaker... saturation at anything above a whisper. Bought a Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ USB interface (I have their Traktor Duo software). Sound quality is night and day. Also more volume at the same output setting.
