Speaker (mains) change

trshottrshot Posts: 54
Hi folks,

I'm running JBL SR 4725A's tops over JBL MR 528S bottoms. I'm thinking about switching to JBL SR4722A tops. Is the swich better/worse,will I gain/lose coverage? We play rooms from 200 to 500 people, I'd love the SR 722's but my budget won't allow! I've read a lot abooout the 12" being a better vocal speaker than the 15", thoughts?

Thank You :D

First of all those SR4000 series speakers are ancient! NOT even close to the same thing as the SRX series and NOTHING like them at all...

Are you a brand snob? Sorry but I am... and jbl and bose are on the top of my AVOID list...If JBL is all you'll use you might just as well quit reading... but if your interested in a speaker that is on par (or in my opinion BETTER) with the SRX 722 sound quality wise, and 1/2 the price, I suggest you look at the D.A.S. RF 1264/ RF 1294 speakers.. Under $800 each and light and powerful, Call NSL (Northern Sound and light)

Now, I realize you have NEVER heard of these speakers but the first thing you'll notice is that they are MUCH smoother sounding than the JBLs, (JBL's are harsh and hard to listen to for long periods (not very accurate actually especially those old SR 4000 series speakers I would steer clear of those...but that's MY opinion)

    here is a link:
    http://www.northernsound.net/Sales/spea ... frame.html
Scroll down to the RF 1264 (60 X 40 pattern good for arraying and keeping the sound off reflective surfaces)
and RF1294 (90 X 40 for single speaker per side coverage)

Now that is my opinion, and you can take it for what it's worth, but you will be MUCH happier with the D.A.S. than even the SRX 722's.. so there you have it..

    Hi Gadget,

no, I'm not JBL specific, I only have them as they are "affordable" as used boxes. lol, your right I've NEVER heard of DAS and sadly it looks like the suggestions you made may be discontinued as I did not find them on NSL's site. I even did an internet search with no luck. Maybe I'll buy yours :D ! What about used EAW tops? One more thing, how available are replacement parts, ie: diaphrams, speaker recone kits? what is your take on my MRX528s bottoms, what do you use for your bottoms?

I've read a lot of your (and DRA's) posts and I value your opinions.......Thank You

Dude.. I just called today and they are a current model that they sell (they don't stock it but takes only a few days to get them) and I got a price of $782... the link doesn't allow you to go to the specific speaker you need to go to, select the "REFERENCE series" from the menu on the left (5th one down), then scroll down to the RF 1264 (third one down) or RF 1594 (4th one down)...

I build my own speakers similar to these and I can't BUILD them for the money these cost! They are comparable to speakers costing more than twice as much...and as good as some costing 3-4 times as much...

If you still have problems finding them do a "shop by category" select Speakers/speaker systems/ horns and drivers then D.A.S. audio, and "Reference series"...

I have no experience with the JBL MRX series speakers.. I am NOT a fan of the cheaper JBL speakers (or their mid grade speakers either for that matter) The subs are power hungry and if not fed properly will be sub par in performance.. they are now made in china...I use Labsubs mostly (MONSTROUS output) , some turbo manifolds I built, some reflex cabs I built and some 2X18" OAP's I reloaded with Peavey low riders...I have provided links to the reflex boxes in DIY form on the FAQ menu...

As for the D.A.S. products they are EXTREMELY responsive to this market and parts and service are readily available. They are really trying to establish a foothold here and I really like the price point to performance ratio.. very little competition as far as I can see..
